Etsy listing photo requirements: 2026 checklist

Etsy's recommended photo size, thumbnail ratio and file size, its rules on original photos, and a checklist for listing photos that get clicked.

Etsy's search results are a wall of thumbnails, and your first photo decides whether a shopper clicks. This checklist covers Etsy's own recommendations from its Help Center and the photo rules in its House Rules, checked on 9 October 2026.

Size and format

  1. Size: at least 2000 px on the shortest side. That's Etsy's recommendation, so photos stay sharp when shoppers zoom.
  2. Thumbnail ratio: 4:3, landscape. Your first photo is cropped to this shape in search, so shoot horizontally and keep the product centred.
  3. Resolution: 72 PPI. This setting doesn't affect how sharp a photo looks on screen; the pixel size does.
  4. File size: Etsy warns that files over 1 MB may not finish uploading on a slow connection.
  5. Format: JPG is the usual choice for photos, and keeps files small.

Our free Etsy image resizer makes 4:3 photos at 2000 px on the shortest side and keeps them under 1 MB. It runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.

Etsy's rule on original photos

Etsy's House Rules ask for original photos of the actual item buyers will receive, not renderings or stock photos. There are exceptions, such as mockups for print-on-demand designs, but for most physical products the rule is simple: the photo must show the real thing.

  1. Every photo shows the item accurately: its colour, size and details.
  2. At least one photo shows the item exactly as it's sold, on a plain backdrop.
  3. Props and scenes don't suggest that something is included when it isn't.
  4. If you used AI tools, check Etsy's current rules for your category and disclose AI use wherever Etsy asks for it. StudioShot Pro images carry AI metadata and C2PA Content Credentials, a signed record of how each image was made, which backs up that disclosure.

A photo set that sells

  1. Thumbnail: the product alone on a clean backdrop, centred and cropped to 4:3.
  2. Another angle, or the product in use.
  3. A close-up of the texture, stitching, materials or finish.
  4. Scale: in a hand, being worn, or next to a familiar object.
  5. A lifestyle shot in a setting that matches your shop's style.
  6. Each colour or size you offer, if they look different.
  7. The packaging, if it's part of the gift appeal.

Before you upload

  • The shortest side is at least 2000 px.
  • The first photo works as a 4:3 crop, with the product centred.
  • Every thumbnail in your shop uses the same backdrop.
  • Files are under 1 MB if your uploads keep failing.

Making the photos

StudioShot Pro starts from your own photo and keeps the product exactly as you photographed it, changing only the background, light and shadows. Our page on product photos for Etsy shows how to use it within Etsy's rules.
