Etsy listing photo sizes

Etsy uses your first photo as the thumbnail in search results and on your shop page, and shows it in a 4:3 landscape frame. A photo of another shape is cropped to fit, which can cut off the top of a tall product or the sides of a wide one. The resizer makes these sizes:

SizePixelsUse it for
Listing photo, 4:32667 × 2000 pxEvery photo, and above all the first one: it matches the thumbnail frame
Square2000 × 2000 pxShops that already use square photos and want to stay consistent

Etsy recommends at least 2000 px on the shortest side, a 4:3 thumbnail and 72 PPI, and notes that files over 1 MB may not finish uploading on a slow connection. Source: Etsy Help, image requirements and best practices.

How to resize photos for Etsy

  1. Add your photos

Drop in up to 30 photos, or tap to choose them from your phone. JPG, PNG and WebP all work.

  2. Choose the size and fit

Pick 4:3 for listing photos. Fit keeps the whole product; Fill covers the frame and crops the edges.

  3. Download and list

Download each photo, or all of them in one ZIP file, then add them to your listing in Shop Manager.

Fit or fill?

Phone photos are usually 3:4 portrait, so they're taller than Etsy's 4:3 frame. Fill crops a lot off the top and bottom of a portrait photo, so use it only when the product sits in the middle with plenty of space around it.

Fit keeps the whole photo and adds space on the left and right. With Match photo edges, the added space takes the colour of your backdrop, so on a plain background it's hard to see where the photo ends. On a busy background, choose white, or retake the photo in landscape.

Tips for Etsy listing photos

  • Shoot in landscape when you can, with space around the product. Then the 4:3 size needs no added space at all.
  • Make your first photo the clearest one, with the whole product in view. It's the one shoppers see in search.
  • Keep the 1 MB option on if you upload from your phone on mobile data. At these sizes the quality difference is hard to see.
  • Rename your originals before resizing, for example ceramic-mug.jpg rather than IMG_4031.jpg. The resizer keeps the name and adds the size.
  • Resizing can't add detail. A photo smaller than 2000 px is enlarged and looks softer, so start from your phone's full-size original.

Questions about resizing photos for Etsy

What size should Etsy listing photos be?

Etsy recommends at least 2000 px on the shortest side, in a 4:3 landscape shape for the thumbnail. 2667 × 2000 px meets both.

Why does Etsy crop my photos?

Search results and your shop page show the first photo in a 4:3 frame, so square and portrait photos are cropped to fill it. Resize to 4:3 with Fit and nothing is cut off.

Does resizing lower the quality?

Making a photo smaller keeps it sharp. The 1 MB option lowers the JPG quality slightly when a file would be bigger than that; switch it off for the highest quality.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. The resizer runs in your browser, so your photos never leave your device and there's nothing to sign up for.

Does it work with iPhone photos?

Yes. When you choose photos on an iPhone, Safari normally hands them over as JPGs. If a HEIC file won't open on a computer, export it as a JPG first.
