WooCommerce product image sizes

WooCommerce makes smaller copies of every image you upload: 600 px wide for the product page and 300 px square thumbnails for the shop grid. Upload larger originals so those copies stay sharp, and make them square so the default 1:1 crop has nothing to cut.

WooCommerce's defaults are 600 px wide single product images, 300 px square thumbnails and 100 × 100 px gallery thumbnails. The upload sizes above are our recommendation, not a WooCommerce rule. Source: WooCommerce developer docs, image sizes.

How to resize photos for WooCommerce

  1. Add your photos

Drop in up to 30 photos, or tap to choose them. JPG, PNG and WebP all work.

  2. Choose a square size

1200 px for most stores, 2000 px if your product pages zoom in on the image.

  3. Upload to WordPress

Download the photos, then set one as the Product image and add the rest to the Product gallery when you edit the product.

Fit or fill?

WooCommerce crops thumbnails from the centre. Resizing to square yourself lets you choose: Fill crops much as WooCommerce would, while Fit keeps the whole product and adds space at the sides.

For tall products such as bottles and vases, Fit is usually better: Fill would cut off the top or the base. Use white or your backdrop's colour for the added space, so it matches the rest of the shop.

Tips for WooCommerce product images

  • If you change the sizes under Appearance → Customize → WooCommerce → Product Images, regenerate thumbnails so older images update too.
  • Use the same backdrop for every product's main image, so the shop grid looks like one set.
  • Name files before uploading, for example ceramic-vase-white.jpg rather than IMG_4031.jpg. WordPress uses the file name as the image's title.
  • Add alt text to each image in the media library. It helps search engines and shoppers using screen readers.

Questions about resizing photos for WooCommerce

What size should WooCommerce product images be?

We recommend square images of at least 1200 × 1200 px, or 2000 × 2000 px if your theme zooms. WooCommerce makes its 600 px and 300 px copies from your upload.

Why are my WooCommerce product images cut off?

The default thumbnail crop is a 1:1 square, so photos of other shapes lose their edges in the shop grid. Resize to square with Fit and nothing is cut.

Do I need to regenerate thumbnails?

Only for images uploaded before you changed the image size settings. New uploads get the new sizes automatically.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. The resizer runs in your browser, so your photos never leave your device and there's nothing to sign up for.
