WooCommerce product image size: 2026 checklist
WooCommerce's default image sizes, the crop setting behind cut-off products, and a checklist for product photos that stay sharp across your shop.

WooCommerce doesn't set strict upload limits of its own. Instead, it makes smaller copies of every product image for different parts of your shop, and your theme decides how big those are. Most problems, like blurry or cropped photos, come from a mismatch between what you upload and those sizes. The defaults below are from WooCommerce's developer documentation, checked on 9 October 2026.
The default sizes
- Single product image: 600 px wide, uncropped. The main image on the product page, shown in the shape you uploaded.
- Thumbnail: 300 px wide, cropped square (1:1) by default. Used in the shop and category grids.
- Gallery thumbnail: 100 × 100 px, always square. The small images under the main image.
Your theme can replace these numbers, and if it does, the theme's sizes win. Check its documentation.
The checklist
- Upload square images unless you've changed the thumbnail crop. With the default 1:1 crop, a tall photo loses its top and bottom in the shop grid.
- Upload at least 1200 × 1200 px, or 2000 × 2000 px if your theme zooms. This is our recommendation, not a WooCommerce rule: the smaller copies are only as sharp as the original.
- Keep one aspect ratio across the shop, matching your thumbnail crop.
- Use JPG for photos. Your maximum upload size depends on your hosting; WordPress shows it on the Media → Add New screen.
- Fill in the alt text for every image in the media library.
- Rename files before uploading, because WordPress uses the file name in the image's URL.
- When editing a product, set the main photo as the Product image and add the rest under Product gallery.
Changing the sizes and the crop
Go to Appearance → Customize → WooCommerce → Product Images. You can set the main image width, the thumbnail width and the thumbnail crop: 1:1, Custom (your own ratio, such as 4:3) or Uncropped. If your theme defines its own sizes, you'll only see the crop option. If there's no Customize item under Appearance, you're probably using a block theme; check its documentation for image settings.
After a change, the thumbnails have to be regenerated before the new sizes show. If older products keep the old shape, the free Regenerate Thumbnails plugin rebuilds them.
To make photos square before you upload them, use our free WooCommerce image resizer. It can add space at the sides instead of cropping, so tall products keep their tops.
Fixing blurry or cut-off images
- Blurry: the original is too small, or the theme shows images larger than the size WooCommerce made. Upload a larger original and regenerate the thumbnails.
- Cut off in the shop grid: the photo isn't square and the crop is 1:1. Upload square photos or switch the crop to Uncropped.
- Uneven heights in the grid: products have different aspect ratios and the crop is Uncropped. Use one ratio for every product.
