Shopify product image sizes
Shopify accepts large images in almost any shape and resizes them for your theme. What it can't fix is a collection where every photo has a different shape: the grid ends up uneven and the store looks less tidy. Pick one size and use it for every product's first image.

How to resize photos for Shopify
Add a collection's photos
Drop in up to 30 photos at once: a whole collection, so every product gets the same size.
Choose one size
Square suits most themes. Whichever you choose, use it for every product in the collection.
Upload to Shopify
Download the ZIP, then add the photos under Media on each product in your Shopify admin.
Fit or fill?
Fill crops the photo to the frame. It's the right choice when products are photographed with room around them, and it gives the tidiest grid, because every product fills its frame the same way.
Fit keeps the whole photo and adds space to reach the frame's shape. Match photo edges colours that space like your backdrop. For a store with white backgrounds, pick white, so every product sits on the same white.
Tips for Shopify product images
- Check your theme settings: many themes have an image ratio option for product cards, such as square, portrait or natural. Match your size to it.
- Use the same backdrop for every product's first image, and lifestyle shots for the others.
- Add alt text to every image in Shopify's media editor. It helps search engines and shoppers using screen readers.
- Rename your originals before resizing, for example linen-shirt-blue.jpg rather than IMG_4031.jpg. The resizer keeps the name and adds the size.

What size should Shopify product images be?
2048 × 2048 px for square images, as Shopify recommends. Whatever size you choose, use it for every product in a collection.
Do Shopify product images have to be square?
No. Shopify accepts any shape, but your theme may show product cards in one shape. Square is the safest choice; 4:5 portrait suits clothing if your theme supports it.
Why are my products different sizes on my collection page?
Because their photos have different shapes. Resize every product's first image to the same size and the grid lines up.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. The resizer runs in your browser, so your photos never leave your device and there's nothing to sign up for.
