Shopify photo checker
Check product photos against Shopify's recommendations and limits before you upload them, so every product in a collection looks its best. Your photos stay on your device.
Your photos stay on your device. Nothing is uploaded.
What the checker looks at
Shopify accepts photos in almost any shape and size, so the checker focuses on two things: staying within Shopify's limits, and photos good enough to stand next to each other in a collection.
| Check | What it looks for |
|---|---|
| Size | At least 2048 px on the shortest side, as Shopify recommends for square images |
| Upload limits | No more than 5000 × 5000 px or 25 megapixels, and under 20 MB |
| Shape | Whether the photo is square, the shape most themes use for product cards |
| Sharpness | Whether the photo looks in focus |
| Light | Whether the photo looks too dark |

How to check your Shopify photos
Add a collection's photos
Drop in up to 10 photos: the first image of each product in a collection.
Read the results
Each check passes or tells you what to improve. Look for photos that differ from the rest in shape or light.
Fix and upload
Make them all one size with the Shopify image resizer, then add them under Media in your Shopify admin.
What it can't check for you
A tidy store depends on photos looking alike, and on details the checker can't see:
- Every product in a collection uses the same shape and backdrop for its first image.
- Each image has alt text in Shopify's media editor.
- The file has a descriptive name, such as linen-shirt-blue.jpg.

Questions about checking Shopify photos
What happens if my photo is bigger than Shopify's limit?
Shopify doesn't accept images over 5000 × 5000 px, 25 megapixels or 20 MB. Resize the photo first; 2048 × 2048 px is plenty for most themes.
Why does the checker say my photo isn't square?
Shopify shows photos in the shape you upload, but most themes lay out product cards as squares, and a collection looks tidiest when every first image has the same shape. If your theme uses another shape, use that for every product instead.
How does it tell if a photo is blurry?
It measures how crisp the strongest edges in the photo are, such as the outline of the product or the text on a label. In-focus photos have crisp edges somewhere; blurry ones don't. It's a good guide rather than a verdict, so zoom in and look yourself if it flags a photo.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. The checker runs in your browser, so your photos never leave your device and there's nothing to sign up for.
