Etsy photo checker
Check a listing photo against Etsy's recommendations before you upload it, and see exactly how the search thumbnail will crop it. Your photos stay on your device.

What the checker looks at
Your first photo becomes the thumbnail shoppers see in Etsy search, so it decides whether they click. The checker tests each photo against what Etsy recommends, and against two things any buyer notices: whether it's sharp, and whether it's too dark.
| Check | What it looks for |
|---|---|
| Size | At least 2000 px on the shortest side, as Etsy recommends |
| Thumbnail crop | How much of the photo the 4:3 search thumbnail cuts off, and whether your product is inside it |
| File size | Under 1 MB, so it finishes uploading on a slow connection |
| Sharpness | Whether the photo looks in focus |
| Light | Whether the photo looks too dark |

Each check passes or tells you what to improve. The shaded part of the preview is what the search thumbnail cuts off.
Fix and list
Fix size and shape with the Etsy image resizer, retake blurry or dark photos, then upload in Shop Manager.
What it can't check for you
Some of Etsy's rules are about what a photo shows, not how it's made. Etsy's House Rules ask for original photos of the real item, so check these yourself:
- The photo shows the real item buyers will receive, not a rendering or a stock photo.
- Colours, size and details look the way they do in person.
- Props and scenes don't suggest that something is included when it isn't.
- If you used AI tools, you've disclosed it wherever Etsy asks for it.

Questions about checking Etsy photos
Why does the checker show part of my photo shaded?
That's what Etsy's 4:3 search thumbnail cuts off. Square and portrait photos lose their top and bottom, so keep your product inside the clear area, or make the photo 4:3 with the resizer.
Is a photo under 2000 px rejected by Etsy?
No. 2000 px on the shortest side is Etsy's recommendation, not a rule, so the checker flags it as something to improve: smaller photos look soft when shoppers zoom in.
How does it tell if a photo is blurry?
It measures how crisp the strongest edges in the photo are, such as the outline of the product or the text on a label. In-focus photos have crisp edges somewhere; blurry ones don't. It's a good guide rather than a verdict, so zoom in and look yourself if it flags a photo.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. The checker runs in your browser, so your photos never leave your device and there's nothing to sign up for.
